Fractions

Fractions are probably one of the trickiest areas of Maths.  Here are some games that might help you apply and practise your fraction knowledge:

Fraction parachutes

Fraction Pairs

Fraction and decimal pairs

Fraction and percentage pairs

Are you good at persuading?

In Literacy we are looking at how a writer can use different techniques to persuade people to do something, buy something or change their opinion.  What would you say to your parents to persuade them to let you stay up for an extra hour?

Awongleema

Today we have been telling the story of the magical tree, Awongaleema, to Year 1 children.  Can you remember the story and tell it someone at home?  Tell us what they think in the comment box.

Friend or Foe by Michael Morpurgo

What did you think of the story?
Did it end the way you thought it would?
Which character was your favourite?
Would you recommend the book to other Year 4 children?

World War 2

In Year 4 we have started to learn about World War 2.  So far we have tried some ration treats (carrot fudge), read part of a story based around two evacuees and researched what it was like for children and women during the war.

If you would like to find out more or test your knowledge you can go on the bbc website by clicking here.

Poetry

In Year 4 we have been writing poems using similes and metaphors.  Here is a poem we wrote together, we have used metaphors to describe an aeroplane.

Aeroplane

The aeroplane is swooping, gliding and magnificent,
Beautifully elegant in the air.
It's wings flap and turn.
It's glistening eyes search and sparkle
In the dark.
The aeroplane's body is plump,
It's feathers are colourful and smooth.
The chirping fills the calm air,
It's excitment travles quickly.

What do you think we have compared the aeroplane to?  What simile can you think of to describe an aeroplane?

Do you know your times tables?

It is the expectation that by the end of Year 4 children know all of the times tables up to 12 x 12.  In school we are practising our 6, 7 and 8 times tables.

Here are some links to some websites to help you learn them:

SpeedGrid
Disappearing tables
Multiplication puzzle

Don't forget you can always practise by listening to the songs on Mathletics.
